Quitting smoking is a difficult and discouraging road for many people. As health and human services professionals, we’re on the front lines of people’s choices and habits, and the effects they have on people’s health. The information we’re able to share, and the attitude with which we convey it, can make the difference to a patient or client struggling with a health issue. No matter what area of health and human services realm we work in, we’ll almost certainly have patients or clients who smoke and many who may be trying to quit smoking. What an impact we can have, and what an encouragement we can be. This also applies if you’re the one struggling with a smoking addiction. You may be trying not to think about the harm that cigarettes are causing you because you don’t feel like you’ll ever succeed at quitting.
